The International Labour Organization (ILO) has applauded India for its social sector coverage, which has doubled from 24.4% in 2021 to 48.8% in 2024. This signifies that 920 million people are now covered under at least one social protection scheme, providing welfare and financial security. This achievement is particularly encouraging, demonstrating a significant spike in coverage.

The ILO and the ministry of labour attribute this growth to various government schemes, including health insurance, pension, and employment support, which have benefited millions. The ministry reports that 65% of the population benefits from at least one form of social protection, delivered in cash or kind through central government schemes. This progress has also contributed to a 5% increase in global social protection coverage.
